Give Alcamo one night as a base between Palermo and Trapani: the old town is 2 hours on foot, and Alcamo Marina's beach is 5 km downhill.
Alcamo sits on a hillside below Mount Bonifato, about 42 km from Palermo airport and 52 km from Trapani, with the Gulf of Castellammare and its own beach hamlet, Alcamo Marina, 5 km north. The draw is the compact Corso 6 Aprile with the Castle of the Counts of Modica, the Arab fountain and the Sanctuary of the Most Holy Mary of Miracles, plus cheap beds for people touring western Sicily by car. It is a working town, not a resort: most travellers use it as a one-night base or skip it for Erice, Scopello or Castellammare del Golfo.

Get around
The old town is walkable: Corso 6 Aprile runs from the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie to Porta Palermo in about 20 minutes. For Alcamo Marina, the railway station or Mount Bonifato you need a car, taxi or the local Reginella bus (town service about €1.10, Alcamo Marina about €1.50 — check current fares). Leave the car in the Piazza Bagolino or Piazza della Repubblica car parks; the centre lanes are tight and partly restricted.

- Summer afternoons on the Corso are hot and shade is patchy; do the walk before 11:00 or after 17:00.
- Many small hotels and B&Bs close or raise rates in August; book ahead for June, when the Madonna of Miracles festival fills the town.
- Beach at Alcamo Marina has limited lifeguard cover outside peak season.
Alcamo is a quiet inland town and street crime is rare; the real risks are summer heat, narrow lanes with fast scooters, and unlit stretches of the Corso after midnight. Use normal care with parked cars and beach bags at Alcamo Marina.
