Albury-Wodonga is one place in practice: Albury on the New South Wales bank of the Murray, Wodonga on the Victorian bank, with a bus between the two centres every 30 minutes. It sits on the Hume Freeway, about 3 h 30 min from Melbourne and 5 h 30 min from Sydney, and the train from Melbourne is capped at a flat regional fare. Most travellers use it as a driving or rail stop, then push on to Beechworth, Bright or the Rutherglen wineries.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: the sights are spread across two states and the signage between them is patchy. Both cities have bus networks and a cross-border bus links the two CBDs every 30 minutes (check). Trains: Albury station is served by NSW TrainLink (two services a day from Sydney, one daytime and one overnight) and by V/Line (three services daily from Melbourne); Wodonga station is V/Line only. Language
English everywhere, with a fast, informal Australian style: shortened words (arvo, servo, brekkie), 'mate' for anyone and irony as default. Place names across the country come from Aboriginal languages, and signs increasingly use dual names.
