Alburquerque
Half a day is enough: see the medieval castle and the old gate, then move on to Badajoz or Cáceres. Not a base.
Alburquerque is a small Extremaduran town with a hilltop castle (Castillo de Alburquerque) and a 13th-century city gate. Most visitors stop for 2–3 hours on the way between Badajoz and Cáceres. The town has a few ham-focused eateries but limited accommodation.
