Albufeira
Base in Albufeira for 3–5 nights if you want beach, bars and boat trips without a car; skip it if you want quiet Portugal or old-town character.
Albufeira is the Algarve's biggest resort: a rebuilt old town on a cliff, a long strip of sand west of it, and a nightlife strip at Praia da Oura that runs until dawn in summer. The town itself is not old Portugal — the 1755 earthquake and tsunami flattened the lower village — so come for the beaches, the boat trips to the caves and the ease of a car-free holiday, not for history. It suits groups and families who want everything within walking distance; couples and drivers often prefer Lagos, Carvoeiro or Alvor.

Get around
The old town, the beach and the marina are walkable, but the hill between the old town and the Strip is steep. Local Giro buses take cash or a pass, not bank cards. Taxis and ride-hailing cover short hops; a car helps for Galé, Benagil and the N125 beaches but parking in the centre is scarce in summer.

Scams and watch-outs
- The Strip at 02:00 is loud, drunk and pickpocket-heavy; keep bags zipped and never leave drinks unattended.
- Old-town lanes and clifftop paths have unlit drops and loose edges — stay back from the rim, especially after rain.
- Some restaurants and bars in the busiest lanes have no posted prices; ask the total before you order.
- Atlantic water is cold and has rip currents; swim near lifeguards, and note that many beaches have no lifeguard outside summer.
- In winter many bars, restaurants and boat operators shut; check before booking a low-season trip.
Albufeira is a low-violence resort town; the real risks are nightlife drink spiking and theft on The Strip, rip currents on unguarded beaches, and unlit clifftop edges.
