Alameda
Give Alameda one full day plus a half-day if you want USS Hornet or the flea market: it is a quiet island base 25 min by ferry from Oakland, not a sightseeing hub.
Alameda is an island city in the East Bay, separated from Oakland by the Oakland Estuary and reached by bridge, tunnel or a 10-minute ferry from Jack London Square. It is a residential, low-rise place with Victorian streets, a decommissioned naval air station at Alameda Point, a bay beach and one big military museum. Most travellers use it as a calm, cheaper base for Oakland and San Francisco rather than a destination in itself. Two nights covers the island; one day is enough if you only want the highlights.

The island is flat and walkable, and biking is easy on the protected paths and bike lanes. AC Transit buses loop the island and connect to Fruitvale and other BART stations. The free Alameda–Oakland Water Shuttle links Jack London Square and Alameda Tuesday–Sunday, and the San Francisco Bay Ferry runs from Main Street and Alameda Seaplane. A car helps for Alameda Point and Bay Farm Island.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Do not walk the Posey Tube: it is a noisy car tunnel with a sidewalk, not a pleasant route.
- Parking at Crown Beach costs a fee and fills on warm weekends.
- Some Alameda Point sites and the skate park have had access changes during construction: check before you go.
- Sales tax is added at the till; listed menu prices are before tax.
Alameda is a low-crime residential island and generally safe by day and evening. The real issues are traffic on Park Street, cold bay water at Crown Beach, and late-night quiet streets where you should stick to lit main roads.
