Alajuela
Sleep one night in Alajuela before or after a SJO flight, not as a base: the airport is 2–3 km away, downtown is walkable in an afternoon.
Alajuela sits 2–3 km from Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) and about 20 km from San José, so it works as the first or last night of a Costa Rica trip rather than a sightseeing base. Downtown is small and flat: cathedral, central park, a free history museum and a football stadium, all within about 15 minutes on foot. Poás Volcano and the coffee towns north of the city are the real day trips. Budget one night, two if you land late and leave for La Fortuna or the Pacific the next morning.

Get around
Downtown is small enough to cover on foot in an afternoon. Red taxis are metered in colones and plentiful; orange airport taxis accept US dollars. Public buses (TUASA and Station Wagon) run to San José every few minutes for under US$1, and there are services to Heredia, Sarchí, San Ramón and Poás. A commuter train runs to San José via Heredia a few times each morning and evening; it does not serve the airport. For anything outside the centre, a car or a shuttle is easier.
