Al Shamal

Go as a full day trip from Doha (about 1 h 20 min by car) for Al Zubarah Fort and the northern beaches; sleep one night only if you want the fort plus two or three villages.
Al Shamal is Qatar's northern municipality: the UNESCO pearling site of Al Zubarah, a string of abandoned fishing villages along the coast, two restored desert forts and quiet beaches. It is the furthest point in the country from Doha, about 110 km up the Al Shamal Road, and almost everything is free and outdoors. It works as a long day trip in the cool months; in summer there is no shade and nothing to do indoors.

Get around
You need a car. The Q1 (Al Shamal Road) runs the length of the municipality; Al Areesh Road reaches the western villages and forts. Mowasalat routes 100 and 101 run from Al Ghanim bus station in Doha to Al Ruwais and Al Shamal, roughly 2–2.5 h each way, a few departures a day — confirm the current timetable and call Mowasalat on +974 4458 8888 before relying on it. Taxis and ride-hailing are scarce this far north; arrange your return or drive.

Etiquette
- Greeting: 'As-salamu alaykum'; handshake with the same sex; wait for a woman to offer her hand; avoid: Kissing or hugging in greeting in public
- Right hand: Eat, give and take with the right hand; avoid: Passing things with the left hand
- Feet: Sit with feet on the floor; avoid: Showing the soles of your feet to others
- Mosques: Visit Fanar or the State Mosque outside prayer times; women cover hair (abayas lent); avoid: Entering during prayers or photographing worshippers
- Hospitality: Accept coffee and dates when offered; drink at least one cup; avoid: Refusing outright

Scams and watch-outs
- Almost no shade, no shops and no fuel between towns: carry water and fill up in Doha or Al Khor.
- Al Jemail village is fenced and visits need prior approval from Qatar Museums; do not climb the walls.
- Al Zubarah archaeological site (as opposed to the fort) has been closed; confirm before you plan around it.
- Beaches have no lifeguards; rocks at Fuwairit and strong currents are the real risks.
- Summer heat is dangerous for walking ruins; go before 10:00 or after 16:00 in the cool months only.
Very low crime; the real risks are the drive (long, straight, fast highway), summer heat, unguarded beaches and getting stranded without fuel or a return bus. Tell someone your route if you go to the western forts.
