Akita is the capital of Akita prefecture and the transport hub of the northern Tohoku coast, just under four hours from Tokyo by Komachi Shinkansen. The city itself is compact and low-key: a castle park, a red-brick museum, sake, kiritanpo hotpot and the Kanto lantern festival. Most travellers use it as a base for the prefecture rather than a destination in its own right.

Get around
The centre is walkable: Akita Station to Senshu Park is about 15 minutes on foot. City buses leave from the station forecourt for the zoo, the prefectural museum and the convent; taxis queue at the station. Free bicycles can be arranged at the tourist information office on the station's 2nd level. In winter, snow and ice slow everything down.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter brings heavy snow and ice: January snowfall averages around 100 cm, so allow extra time and wear boots.
- Many sights are spread out and bus frequencies drop in the evening; check the last bus before you set out.
- Kanto Matsuri (Aug 3–6) draws crowds and accommodation in the city may be limited: check availability early.
- Small restaurants and bars may be cash-only; carry yen.
Akita is a safe, quiet city; the real risks are winter snow and ice, long gaps between buses, and cash-only small bars. Carry yen and check the last bus.
