Akaa
Use Akaa as a short rail stop between Helsinki and Tampere, not a base: Toijala station, the locomotive museum and the wallpaper factory are within a 15-minute walk.
Akaa is a small Pirkanmaa municipality of about 17,000 people, formed when Toijala, Viiala and Kylmäkoski merged in 2007–2011. Toijala has been a railway junction since 1876, so most trains between Helsinki and Tampere stop there. The sights are few, close together and mostly open only in summer, which makes Akaa a short stop rather than a destination.

Get around
Toijala's sights are walkable from the station in 5–15 minutes. Between the three centres there are only a few internal bus departures a day, plus the Akaakyyti dial-a-ride minibus, which must be ordered in advance by app or phone. A car or bicycle is the practical option for Viiala, Kylmäkoski and the lakes.

- Shops and restaurants close early; do not count on a late meal outside the pubs.
A quiet small town, but plan around the practical risks: icy pavements in winter, unlit roads outside the centres, and very few buses or trains late in the evening.
