Skip as a base unless you need a cheap bed near the 401: Ajax is a half-day waterfront and history stop, 40 min by GO train from Toronto.
Ajax is a lakeside suburb in Durham Region, midway between Toronto and Oshawa, built in 1941 around a wartime munitions plant and named after the Royal Navy cruiser HMS Ajax. There is no old town to wander: the draws are 6 km of Lake Ontario waterfront, a memorial garden, a former 1871 church turned arts venue and a historic strip of Kingston Road. Most visitors see it in half a day, or use it as a cheaper bed than downtown Toronto with a 40-minute train ride in.
