Orlando International Airport (MCO): visitor guide

MCO sits southeast of Orlando, roughly 15 km from downtown (check). There is no rail link into the city, so your realistic choices are ride-hailing, taxi, a shared shuttle, the public bus or a rental car.

Take ride-hailing or a taxi if you are two or more people, arriving at night, or staying on International Drive — the fare is usually cheaper than two shuttle seats and the door-to-door time is 25–35 minutes off-peak. Take the bus only if you are solo, daytime, and not in a hurry. Rent a car if the theme parks or anywhere outside Orlando are on your plan.

The airport is southeast of the city, off the Beachline Expressway (SR 528) and the Central Florida GreeneWay (SR 417). Both feed into the I-4 corridor, which is where the traffic is.

The main terminal is a single building with two sides, A and B, connected to four airside concourses by an automated people mover. Rental cars sit in a separate garage reached by shuttle or walkway from the terminal (check).

Ride-hailing (Uber, Lyft) picks up from marked zones outside the arrivals level; follow the app's instructions to the correct door. Off-peak, expect 25–35 minutes and US$35–60 to International Drive or downtown Orlando (2026 estimate). Surge pricing applies at peak arrival banks and during storms.

Taxis wait at the kerb outside baggage claim. Fares are metered and typically land in the same US$35–60 band to the tourist corridor (2026 estimate, check). Confirm the meter is running before you set off.

Shared shuttles sell seats at counters in the terminal and run to the International Drive and Kissimmee hotel strips. They cost less per person than a taxi but wait until the van fills, so add 20–40 minutes (check).

The public bus (Lynx) is the cheapest option, a few dollars, but routes run through the city and take 60–90 minutes with a change downtown (check). Buses do not run all night.

There is no train from MCO into Orlando. Brightline's Florida service connects Miami with Orlando, but its Orlando station is at the airport, not downtown — check whether your onward stop is the airport or the city before booking.

Ride-hailing and taxis operate around the clock; the pickup zones are lit and signposted, and there is usually a staffed taxi rank outside baggage claim. Fares after midnight sit at the top of the US$35–60 band, and surge pricing is common when several flights land together (check).

The public bus does not run overnight, so a late arrival means a car, a taxi or a pre-booked shuttle. If your hotel offers an airport shuttle, confirm the last departure time before you fly — many stop by early evening (check).

If you land after midnight and are heading to the theme parks, consider a hotel near the airport for the first night and move the next morning rather than paying a long-distance fare in the dark.

MCO has several pay-in and membership lounges across the airside concourses, including options tied to airline programmes and independent access passes. Exact locations, opening hours and day-pass prices change — check with the airport or your card provider before you travel.

If you are connecting through MCO, note that the people mover between the main terminal and the concourses takes a few minutes, so leave time to reach your gate before using a lounge.

All the major US rental brands operate at MCO, with counters in the terminal and cars in a nearby garage. Rates run about US$45–110 a day before insurance, fuel and fees (2026 estimate), and Florida toll roads are common on the routes to the parks — ask about a toll transponder.

Book ahead for holiday weeks and spring break; walk-up rates at Orlando are among the highest in the country. Check what the base rate covers: liability limits in the US are low, and one-way drops to another Florida city can add a fee.

Driving in Orlando is straightforward but the I-4 corridor jams at commuter times and around park closing. If you are staying on International Drive and only doing the parks, a car plus parking fees can cost more than ride-hailing each day.
