Base in George Town and give Air Itam one full day: Kek Lok Si in the morning, Penang Hill funicular in the afternoon, laksa at the market between them.
Air Itam is a suburb of George Town on the road up to Penang Hill, not a resort town. Two things pull people here: Kek Lok Si, the hillside Buddhist temple, and the funicular to the top of Penang Hill, 833 m up and several degrees cooler. The town itself is a working market district with a famous laksa stall and almost no hotel stock. Most travellers sleep in George Town and come out for the day; a night here only makes sense if you want the hill at sunrise or a cheap room near the market.

Get around
The town centre is compact and walkable, but pavements often disappear and you end up on the road shoulder. Kek Lok Si to the Penang Hill base station is a 20-min walk past the War Memorial Park; bus 204 covers the same stretch. Rapid Penang buses 201, 203, 204 and 502 serve the centre, 306 links the airport and Bayan Lepas side. Taxis rarely use the meter: agree the fare first.

- Residential township south of the centre along Lebuhraya Thean Teik. Banks, supermarkets, pharmacies and laundromats; needs a bus or car to reach the sights.
- Penang Hill summit
- One hotel at the top station, from about RM300 weekdays / RM380 weekends. You pay for the view and the cool air.
- George Town (the practical base)
- 20–30 min by bus 203 or 204, or about RM20–25 by taxi from KOMTAR. Far more rooms, food and evening life.

Scams and watch-outs
- Taxis from George Town often refuse the meter and inflate the fare; agree a price before you get in, and expect a 50% surcharge after midnight.
- Midday heat and humidity are the real limit on walking; do Kek Lok Si early and the hill late.
- Penang Hill is very crowded at weekends and on public holidays — buy the funicular ticket and go early.
- Kek Lok Si charges separately for the Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas and the mini funicular to the Kuan Yin statue; the main halls are free.
- Alcohol is not sold at Muslim establishments and is best not drunk in public streets.
Air Itam is a low-crime suburban area; the practical risks are traffic on roads without pavements, open gutters, midday heat and unmetered taxis. Petty theft is uncommon but keep bags zipped in the market crush.
