Ai-Khanoum
Skip unless you are an archaeologist or a determined history traveller with a secure itinerary in northeast Afghanistan. The site is a ruin field with no visitor infrastructure.
Ai-Khanoum was a Hellenistic city on the Oxus, founded in the 4th century BC and destroyed around 145 BC. Today it is an unmarked archaeological site in Kunduz province with a gymnasium, a theatre and an acropolis. There are no facilities, no guides and no official protection. Only go if you have a local fixer, a 4×4 and a very high tolerance for risk.
