Ahuachapán

Base here 1–2 nights for hot springs, fumaroles and the Ruta de las Flores; the colonial centre is a half-day, so pair it with Ataco or Apaneca.

Ahuachapán is a working highland city of about 38,000 people and the western anchor of the Ruta de las Flores. The draw is geothermal: steam vents inside town at Los Ausoles, hot-spring pools at Termales Santa Teresa and the Malacatiupan falls a short ride north. The compact colonial centre around Parque La Concordia takes an afternoon. Most travellers sleep one or two nights and use it as a base for the coffee towns, El Imposible or the Guatemalan border.

Get around

The centre is compact and walkable. Moto taxis (tuc-tucs) cover short hops cheaply; regular taxis wait near the downtown parks and can be called to your hotel. There is no central bus terminal: buses stop on CA-8 near the Hospicio de Varones, and the 202 back to San Salvador stops a little further along the road, so ask locally. A driver for a half or full day is negotiable if you speak some Spanish.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: Handshake, 'buenos días'; avoid: Skipping greetings in shops
  • Checkpoints: Hands visible, calm, ID ready; avoid: Arguing or filming
  • Conversation: Food, surf, football; avoid: Gangs, prisons and politics with strangers

Scams and watch-outs

  • Signs at Salto de Malacatiupan prohibit swimming and diving: people have died in the lower falls, where a hydraulic pulls swimmers under.
  • Keep back from the fumaroles at Los Ausoles; the ground and steam are hot.
  • Laguna del Espino is not considered safe for swimming.
  • Buses to Guatemala and some nearby towns leave from other points in town: ask locally.
  • Carry small US dollar notes; change for larger bills can be hard to find.

Ahuachapán is a normal working city and the tourist route is well used, but street crime exists: use registered taxis or moto taxis after dark, keep phones out of sight, and treat the hot springs and fumaroles as the real hazard.
