Agartala is the capital of Tripura and the second-largest city in North-East India, on the Haora River about 90 km from the Bangladesh border. It is a low-rise, walkable-in-parts city whose own sights take a day; its real value is as the base for Udaipur's Tripura Sundari temple, Neermahal water palace, Unakoti and the sanctuaries. Roads out of town are slow, so plan day trips as full days.

Get around

Cycle rickshaws are the main short-hop transport, roughly ₹5–25 a ride; battery rickshaws (tomtom) are cheaper still. Shared auto-rickshaws run fixed routes from stands such as Motorstand, Nagarjala and Old RMS, ₹5–10 a seat. City buses cover seven routes but run infrequently. For Udaipur, Neermahal, Sipahijala or Kamalasagar, hire a car for the day from Battala.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: Namaste (palms together) or a handshake between men; wait for a woman to offer her hand; avoid: Hugging or kissing strangers
  • Hands and feet: Give and eat with the right hand; apologise if your foot touches someone; avoid: Pointing feet at people or shrines; touching books or food with your feet
  • Temples: Shoes off, walk clockwise around shrines, accept prasad (blessed food) with the right hand; avoid: Leather in Jain temples; entering sanctums that say Hindus only
  • Home visit: Bring sweets or fruit; accept tea at least once; avoid: Refusing all food; wearing shoes inside
  • Questions: Expect personal questions (married? job? salary?) as friendliness; avoid: Taking offence; answer vaguely if you prefer
  • Saying no: A firm, polite 'nahi, dhanyavaad' (no, thank you) and keep walking; avoid: Long explanations to touts
  • Dress: Loose clothes covering shoulders and knees; kurta tops are cheap and cool; avoid: Swimwear or shorts away from Goa beaches

Scams and watch-outs

  • Monsoon flooding: the Haora River and city streets flood June–August, and road trips get slow or blocked.
  • Day trips are longer than they look: Udaipur is about 50 km but 1.5 h each way on two-lane roads.
  • Unakoti roads are in poor condition; the train to Kumarghat plus a shared rickshaw is often faster.
  • Drinking in public places is not allowed; buy from a shop and drink indoors.
  • The Bangladesh border is close: carry your passport and visa if you plan to cross at Akhaura.

Agartala is calm by Indian big-city standards; the real risks are monsoon flooding, long day-trip drives on two-lane roads and the nearby international border, where you should carry your passport.
