Afikpo
Ehugbo
Go for 1–2 nights only if you are already in Ebonyi State: the caves, the beaches and the Eke market are the whole trip, and there is no airport.
Afikpo (Ehugbo) is the second-largest town in Ebonyi State, in south-east Nigeria, and the headquarters of Afikpo North. It is a hilly, humid farming town of about 157,000 people with an older Igbo ceremonial tradition, two river beaches and a cave in the south of the area. There is no airport and no rail link: you arrive by road from Abakaliki or Enugu, and most travellers treat it as a one- or two-night stop rather than a base.

Get around
Tricycles (keke), taxis and motorcycle taxis cover the town and are cheap; agree the fare before you get in. Roads out to the beaches and to Amanchor Cave are rough in the rainy season, so hire a car and driver for the day rather than relying on bikes. A bus terminal on Ngodo Road, Amangballa, is reported for longer road legs; confirm which companies and routes actually run before you rely on it (check).

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Greet with a handshake and a question about family; Yoruba juniors may bow or kneel to elders; avoid: Rushing to business
- Titles: Use Sir, Ma, Chief, Alhaji; avoid: First names with older people
- Hands: Right hand to give, receive and eat; avoid: The left hand for money or food
- Dress: Smart clothes for churches, offices and events; modest dress in the north; avoid: Shorts in the north
- Hospitality: Accept food or drink offered; avoid: Flat refusals
- Photos: Ask first; avoid: Police, soldiers, airports, government buildings
Scams and watch-outs
- Check your government's travel advice for Ebonyi State before booking; advice changes and can cover the whole state.
- Road travel after dark is the main risk: plan to arrive before sunset and do not take night buses if you can avoid them.
- There are police and military checkpoints on the main roads; carry ID and be patient.
- Bring cash. Card acceptance is limited outside the bigger hotels and supermarkets, and ATMs can be empty.
- The rainy season turns unpaved roads to mud and can make the cave and beach tracks impassable.
- Some traditional ceremonies and the Ogo initiation are closed to outsiders and to women: ask before photographing anyone or any shrine.
Afikpo itself is a small, quiet town, but Ebonyi State sits under travel advisories and the real risks are on the roads: check your government's advice, travel in daylight, and keep cash and ID separate.
