Adams
Adams, North Dakota
Skip Adams as a base: it is a 127-person farm town with a campground and two bars. Stop 1–2 hours if you are driving ND-17, or sleep one night en route.
Adams is a grain-and-farm town on ND-17 in the Red River Valley, about 40 miles west of Grand Forks. There is no hotel, no museum and no main street to browse. What it has is a city-park campground open May to September, two small dams with northern pike and bluegill fishing, and two local bars that serve food. Treat it as a rural overnight or a fishing stop, not a destination.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No hotel, no grocery store and no fuel in town: fill up and buy food in Grafton or Grand Forks.
- Cell coverage is thin on the gravel roads to the dams; download offline maps before you leave the highway.
- Winter brings snow, ice and wind chills well below freezing; the campground closes after September.
- The dams are earthen structures with no railings or lifeguards: fish from stable ground, not the spillway edge.
Very low crime; the real risks are rural driving (deer at dusk, ice, gravel roads), thin cell coverage and winter cold. Tell someone your route before heading to the dams.
