Adaminaby
Stop for 2–3 hours on the Snowy Mountains Highway: Big Trout photo, Snowy Scheme Museum if it is a weekend, then drive on. Sleep only if you fish Lake Eucumbene.
Adaminaby sits at 1,017 m on the windy B72 between Cooma and Tumut, one of the highest towns in Australia. The original town was flooded by Lake Eucumbene when the Snowy Hydro Scheme dammed the Eucumbene River, and the present town is the relocated version. It is a small highway stop with two real sights, not a destination in itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- The B72 Snowy Mountains Highway is winding and climbs to over 1,000 m; snow and black ice are possible from June to August. Check road conditions before driving.
- Kangaroos and wombats are active on the roadside at dawn and dusk.
- Mobile coverage is patchy outside town; download offline maps before you leave Cooma.
- Many businesses keep short or seasonal hours; call ahead out of summer.
Very safe. The real risks are the drive (winding highway, ice in winter, wildlife at dawn and dusk), cold nights year-round at 1,017 m, and patchy mobile coverage.
