Acton
Acton, Ontario
Skip Acton as a base: it is a half-day stop for the Bruce Trail and the fall fair, with beds and evening food 17 km east in Georgetown.
Acton is a small Halton Hills community of about 9,400 people on Highway 7, sitting above the Niagara Escarpment. It was Canada's leather town from 1842 to 1986, and today it is mainly a trailhead for the Bruce Trail and a one-morning stop between Guelph and Georgetown. There is no hotel strip and no station in the centre: GO trains and buses stop on the edge of town, and most travellers sleep in Georgetown or Guelph.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Trail parking fills on fall weekends; arrive before 10:00.
- The Bruce Trail here crosses private land and road allowances: stay on the blazed path.
- Limehouse kilns and boardwalks are closed at times for repairs: check the conservation authority site.
- Cell signal is patchy in the Limehouse and Silver Creek valleys.
- Most kitchens in town stop serving by 21:00; late arrivals should eat in Georgetown.
Very safe for a small Ontario town; the real risks are highway driving on Highway 7, ice on escarpment trails in winter and unlit country roads after dark.
