Açailândia
Skip Açailândia unless you're passing through on the Belém–Brasília highway: it's a working steel town with no major sights, best for a quick stop or an overnight if you're driving.
Açailândia is a mid-sized city in Maranhão that grew around the Belém–Brasília highway and the Carajás Railway. It's an agribusiness and pig-iron hub, not a tourist destination. Most travellers pass through on the way to the Lençóis Maranhenses or the Amazon, and the town offers a few squares, a big off-season carnival, and basic services, but nothing that justifies a dedicated trip.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, hug or cheek kiss (one in São Paulo, two in Rio); avoid: Being stiff with new acquaintances
- Gestures: Use thumbs-up freely; avoid: The OK hand sign (it is rude)
- Language: Try Portuguese; say obrigado/obrigada; avoid: Defaulting to Spanish
- Time: Expect relaxed social punctuality; avoid: Being late for tours and flights
- Beach: Bring only a towel, cash and a copy of your ID; avoid: Leaving things unattended
Scams and watch-outs
- The railway line does not carry passengers; don't plan to arrive by train.
- Rainy season from November to May can make roads muddy and slow.
- The Açaí-Folia carnival in June brings crowds and higher prices; book ahead if you're coming for it.
Açailândia is generally safe for a short stop, but keep your wits about you at night and in the bus terminal. The main risks are petty theft and traffic.
