Abuja
Give Abuja 2–3 nights: one day for Aso Rock, the mosques and Millennium Park, one for Jabi Lake and a market. Skip it if you want beaches or nightlife.
Abuja is Nigeria's purpose-built capital, planned from scratch in the 1980s and now home to the government, embassies and most national institutions. Streets are wide and calm by Nigerian standards, but the city is spread out, public transport is thin, and hotels and Western food cost more than you would expect inland. Two or three nights covers the landmarks; more only if you are here on business.

Get around
Car or taxi is the main way around; public transport is limited and bus shuttles and okada motorcycles are banned in the city. Uber and Bolt work widely, including to the airport. The Abuja Light Rail serves the west side, linking the city, Idu station and the airport, but only a few trains run per day. Allow 30–60 min for cross-city rides in traffic.

Scams and watch-outs
- Check your government's travel advice for the FCT and for any state you plan to visit before booking.
- Avoid night road travel outside the city; interstate roads are poorly maintained and robberies are reported after dark.
- Carry ID: police, FRSC and VIO checkpoints are common, and seat belts are enforced for driver and front passenger.
- Power cuts are frequent; confirm your hotel has a generator or inverter.
- Ask the fare or meter before you get in a taxi, and use app rides where you can.
Abuja is calmer than Lagos, but the real risks are night road travel, checkpoints and petty theft in markets: use app rides after dark, keep valuables out of sight and check your government's advice for the FCT.
