Abita Springs
Give Abita Springs one day, not a base: brewery tour, pavilion park and UCM Museum, then sleep in Covington or Mandeville.
Abita Springs is a town of about 2,400 people in St. Tammany Parish, on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. It is known for its brewery, an 1884 pavilion and a folk-art museum, and it sits 10 minutes from Covington and about an hour from New Orleans. Almost everyone arrives by car, and most of the town is walkable once you park.

Get around
A car is the practical option: from I-12 take US-190 north to Covington, then SR-36 east into town. Once parked, Main Street, the pavilion park and the museum are a short walk apart. There is no useful local bus service; rideshare coverage is thin outside Covington and Mandeville.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Brewery tours run on set weekend slots only and can sell out: check the official site before you drive out.
- Summer heat and humidity are serious; carry water and plan indoor stops midday.
- Some small venues and taverns are cash-friendly; carry a little cash.
- Rideshare from New Orleans back to the north shore late at night is unreliable and expensive: arrange a driver or sleep nearby.
Abita Springs is a small, low-crime town and feels safe by day and evening. The real risks are summer heat, storms, and driving after drinking on dark parish roads: pick a designated driver.
