Give Abiquiu one full day plus a second morning: Ghost Ranch and Echo Amphitheater in daylight, the O'Keeffe house by advance reservation only.
Abiquiu is a village of about 230 people on US 84 in north-central New Mexico, roughly 60 miles north of Santa Fe. It matters for two things: Ghost Ranch, the red-rock retreat where Georgia O'Keeffe summered from 1934, and the O'Keeffe house in the village itself, which you can only enter on a tour booked through the O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe. There is almost no town to walk around, so a car is the point of the trip.

Get around
You need a car. US 84 runs through the village and north past Ghost Ranch and Echo Amphitheater; NM 96 loops around the north side of Abiquiu Lake. Distances between sights are 10–25 miles, with no useful local bus. Fill up at Bode's General Store, the last gas going north until Cebolla.

Scams and watch-outs
- The O'Keeffe house is reservation-only: book through the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, no walk-ins.
- Forest Service Road 151 to Christ in the Desert is 13 miles of dirt and gravel, steep and slippery when wet; 4WD in snow, not recommended in bad weather.
- Side roads into the Jemez Mountains and San Pedro Parks need high clearance, and 4WD in spring mud; vehicles parked there have been vandalised.
- US 84 north of Abiquiu toward Colorado can be messy after winter storms: check conditions before committing.
- Cell coverage is patchy outside the village; download offline maps before you leave Española.
Low street crime; the real risks are distance, weather and roads. Carry water, tell someone your route, and treat the dirt roads to the monastery and the Jemez as dry-weather-only.
