Abidjan is a morning-and-evening city: do the Plateau and the markets before 11:00, take a car (not a walk) between the lagoon districts, and keep every ride to daylight or a hotel-booked driver.
The honest verdict
Abidjan is spread around the Ebrié Lagoon: Plateau (offices), Cocody (residential, the lagoon bay), Treichville and Marcory (markets and restaurants) are joined by a few bridges that jam at rush hour. The trips that go wrong cross the bridges at 17:00, walk between districts in the midday heat, or arrive at night without a booked car. Four walking clusters cover a first visit; Grand-Bassam and Assinie are trips away from one kept bed.

Three mistakes to avoid
- Street money-changers offering a better rate than banks: short-changing and fake notes are common — use a bank or hotel desk.(Scams)

Money and SIM

- Cash (XOF) for markets, maquis and taxis; cards in larger hotels, malls and a growing number of restaurants. Mobile money (Orange Money, MTN, Moov) is widely used between locals but is fiddly to set up as a visitor.

- Shoulders and knees covered; remove shoes before entering a mosque prayer hall.

- Always greet with 'bonjour' before asking a question or starting a transaction — skipping it reads as rude.
