Aberporth
Go for 1–2 nights as a quiet Cardigan Bay beach base: two sandy beaches, cliff walks and dolphins offshore, no station and thin bus service.
Aberporth is a small Ceredigion village on two Blue Flag beaches, about 6 miles north of Cardigan and 2 miles off the A487 on the B4333. There is no railway station, so you arrive by bus or car. It suits a slow 1–2 night stay for swimming, rock pools and the Ceredigion Coast Path, not a sightseeing checklist. Cardigan, Aberaeron and Aberystwyth are the practical anchors for food, trains and supplies.

Get around

Buses 552 and 554 link Cardigan, Aberporth and New Quay, and the T5 runs along the coast to Aberystwyth and Cardigan; frequency is low and Sunday service is minimal, so check times before you rely on it.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No railway station: bus or car only, and Sunday buses are very limited.
- Mobile signal is patchy: 4G from EE and O2 only, nothing from Three or Vodafone, and no 5G.
- Beach car parks fill on sunny summer weekends; arrive before 10:00.
- Cliff path sections are unfenced and slippery after rain; strong currents and no lifeguard cover outside peak season.
- Many cafés, pubs and guesthouses close or cut hours from November to March.
Very low crime; the real risks are sea and cliff, not people. Swim between flags where lifeguards are on duty, keep back from cliff edges, and carry a charged phone because signal is patchy.

Welsh is widely spoken in Ceredigion; most people switch to English at once, and place names are worth trying out loud.
