Abergavenny is a small market town of about 12,500 people at the mouth of the Usk Valley, where the river leaves the mountains. The castle ruins and the Tuesday market hall fill a half-day; the real reason to sleep here is the walking on the Sugar Loaf, Skirrid and Blorenge, all reachable without a car. Trains from Cardiff take just over an hour, so it works as a car-free base for the eastern Brecon Beacons.

Get around
The town centre is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end; the castle, market hall and main streets sit within it. The railway station is on the east side, a short walk from the centre. Buses link the town to Hereford, Pontypool and Merthyr Tydfil, but mountain and valley sights such as Llanthony, Grosmont and White Castle need a car, taxi or a long walk. Trains run roughly hourly to Newport and Cardiff, and onward to Hereford.
