Aberffraw
Aberffro
Base here 1–2 nights only if you have a car and want quiet coast: the beach, the tidal church and the coastal path are the whole trip.
Aberffraw is a small village on the south-west coast of Anglesey, once the seat of the princes of Gwynedd and now a quiet base of about 600 people. There is a broad sandy beach, a tidal-island church at Cribinau, a pub and a tea room, and the Anglesey Coastal Path runs through. Most travellers see it in half a day; it works as a one- or two-night stop if you are driving and want the coast without Rhosneigr's crowds.

Get around
A car is the practical option: buses 25 and 42 link Holyhead and Bangor via the A4080, but services are infrequent and thin on Sundays. The village itself is walkable; the beach is about 15 min on foot from the centre, and St Cwyfan's is a further 20–25 min along lanes and the coast path. Anglesey Circuit is about 2 km (1.2 mi) away.A car is the practical option: buses 25 and 42 link Holyhead and Bangor via the A4080, but services are infrequent and thin on Sundays. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- St Cwyfan's sits on a tidal island: check tide times before walking the causeway, and never cross a covered causeway.
- Bus services are sparse, especially evenings and Sundays; check the county timetable before relying on them.
- The Crown has limited winter hours: check before you plan an evening around it.
- Coastal path sections can be muddy and exposed; carry a windproof layer even in summer.
Very low crime; the real risks are tides at Cribinau, fast A4080 traffic on the walk to the beach, and weather on the coastal path. In an emergency call 999 or 112.
