Aberdyfi

Aberdyfi (also spelt Aberdovey) is a small Gwynedd seaside village of about 878 people at the mouth of the river Dyfi, on the southern edge of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. It is a two-street resort: harbour, beach, golf links and a railway station on the Cambrian Line. It suits a short stop between Machynlleth and Tywyn, or a slow week of walking, sailing and golf. There is no airport and no nightlife to speak of; the weather decides your day.

Get around
The village is walkable in 15 minutes end to end, but streets off the front are steep. Two Cambrian Line stations serve it: Aberdyfi (west end) and Penhelig (east end, request stop). Buses and the A493 run to Tywyn and Machynlleth. Cycle hire is in Tywyn. A car helps for the hills and the coast road.

Scams and watch-outs
- The beach sits on a tidal estuary: currents near the river mouth are strong. Swim north of the village, away from the mouth, and never use inflatables.
- Red flag means no swimming. There is no full-time lifeguard cover on this stretch.
- Mobile signal and Wi-Fi are patchy in the hills and along the estuary path.
- Eryri mountain weather changes fast: carry waterproofs, a map (OS Explorer OL23) and tell someone your route.
- Many cafés, pubs and B&Bs cut hours or close outside Easter–October; check before you travel for a winter visit.
- Parking near the front fills by mid-morning in summer; use the pay-and-display car parks and walk.
Very low crime; the real risks are the estuary currents, fast-changing mountain weather and steep, unlit lanes after dark. Swim north of the river mouth, heed red flags, and call 999 and ask for Coastguard if someone is in trouble.
