Aberdour
Give Aberdour half a day: castle, two beaches and the coastal path, then train back to Edinburgh. Sleep here only if you want a quiet Fife base.
Aberdour is a small Fife coastal town of about 1,700 people, 32 minutes by train from Edinburgh. Its draw is compact: a ruined castle with gardens, two beaches, a headland and a stretch of the Fife Coastal Path. Most visitors see it as a half-day stop between Edinburgh and Kirkcaldy; a night here suits walkers and golfers who want a slow base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Trains from Edinburgh run roughly twice an hour on weekdays and hourly on Sundays: check the last return before you set out.
- Aberdour Castle opening is limited to certain days and seasons: confirm before travelling.
- The town has few indoor options in rain, and the castle and beaches are exposed: plan a wet-weather fallback (check).
Aberdour is a low-crime small town and safe to walk by day. The real risks are the coastal path in wet weather, slippery rocks at Hawkcraig Point and cold water at the beaches: no lifeguards, and the tide comes in fast.
