Aberdeen
Aberdeen, Washington
Give Aberdeen one night as a base for the southern Olympic Peninsula and the Grays Harbor coast — not a sightseeing stop in itself.
Aberdeen is a working harbour town of about 17,000 at the south end of the Olympic Peninsula, where US 101 meets the road to Westport. It is the practical base for Grays Harbor, the coast and the southern rainforest valleys, and it is known as the birthplace of grunge. Two nights if you want the coast and the park; one night if you are passing through.

Get around
A car is close to essential: buses run in town and to Hoquiam, Westport and Olympia, but nothing serves Olympic National Park. Grays Harbor Transit covers the county; Pacific Transit runs south along US 101.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Rain is the default from October to May: waterproof jacket, not an umbrella.
- Cell coverage drops on the coast and in the rainforest valleys — download offline maps.
- Distances on the peninsula are long; a 'nearby' beach can be an hour each way.
- Some downtown blocks are quiet after dark; park in lit areas.
Aberdeen is a small town with a normal US risk profile: the real hazards are wet roads, dark coastal highways and long drives after a late dinner. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight.
