Abercastle
Abercastell
Give Abercastle half a day on the coast path, not a base: the harbour takes 20 minutes, Carreg Samson 30 more, and the nearest food is 1.5 km away in Trefin.
Abercastle is a one-harbour hamlet on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path: a working slipway, a shingle beach at low tide and a 5,000-year-old burial chamber 800 m west. There are no shops, no pub and almost no beds, so most people walk in from Trefin or drive from St Davids and leave the same day. Stay only if you want the coast path at dawn with nobody on it.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No shop, no cash machine and no pub in the village: bring water and food.
- Harbour parking is small and fills by mid-morning in summer; the lane is narrow for vans and motorhomes.
- The coast path here is exposed cliff walking with unfenced drops: wind and wet rock are the real hazards.
- Mobile signal is patchy in the valley; download an offline map before you arrive.
Very low crime; the real risks are cliff edges, fast tides and weather that turns in an hour. Tell someone your coast-path plan and carry a charged phone.
