Aalborg
Give Aalborg 2 nights: 1 day for the old town and harbourfront, 1 for Lindholm Høje and the fjord. Skip it if you only have 4 days in Denmark.
Aalborg is North Jutland's capital and Denmark's fourth-largest city, 4 h 30 min by train from Copenhagen and about 1 h 20 min from Aarhus. The compact centre is walkable in an afternoon; the Viking burial ground at Lindholm Høje and the fjord sit just outside. It works as a 2-night stop between Aarhus and Skagen, or as a base for the region.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake and eye contact; first names at once; avoid: Titles and small talk that goes on too long
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for meetings and dinners; avoid: Being 15 minutes late without a message
- Home visit: Shoes off; bring flowers or wine; say 'tak for mad' after the meal; avoid: Leaving right after eating
- Conversation: Dry humour, directness and self-deprecation; avoid: Boasting — Janteloven frowns on it
- Queues: Take a number (kølapper) where there is a machine; avoid: Pushing to the counter
- Cycling: Signal stops and turns with your hand; keep right; avoid: Riding side by side in busy lanes
- Toasts: 'Skål' with eye contact before and after drinking; avoid: Looking away mid-toast
Scams and watch-outs
- A low emission zone covers the centre: diesel cars need a particulate filter or Euro 5, and foreign-registered cars must be registered or face a 1,000 kr fee.
- Most shops close at 18:00 on weekdays and 14:00 on Saturday, and are shut on Sunday except some first Sundays.
- Aalborg Carnival (late May) fills beds and bars: book weeks ahead if you want that weekend.
- Aalborghus Castle has no public access to the buildings; only the courtyard and the dungeon/casemates are open.
Aalborg is calm and safe by day and night; the real annoyances are winter ice on pavements, thin late-night buses and expensive taxis. Keep to lit streets around the station after midnight.
