Know before you go
- The hill was called Huelén by the Mapuche; Pedro de Valdivia used it as the base to found the city in 1541, so this is the point where the story starts.
- Entry is free. A short sign-in at the gate can be asked for (check); carry a photo ID copy, not the passport.
- The climb is 10–15 minutes at a slow pace; the top has a small fort, a viewing terrace and a cannon marking the noon time signal (check).
- Pickpockets work the stairs at busy times. Front pockets, zipped bag.
- Safety changes fast at dusk: the hill empties and the paths are dim. Leave before the park closes.
