  • The site was the seat of Wallachian princes into the 18th century before it fell into ruin; excavations from the 1950s exposed the cellars visible today.

Is this really Vlad the Impaler's palace?

It was the seat of Wallachian princes including Vlad III (Vlad Țepeș, the inspiration for Dracula) in the 15th century, though little of the original structure survives above foundation level.

Can I see it without paying?

Yes, the ruins are visible through the street railing; a ticket gets you into the small museum and closer to the site.

Is this the same as Bran Castle?

No. Bran Castle, near Brașov, is the 'Dracula's castle' of tourism; Vlad the Impaler had little real connection to Bran and a much stronger one here.
