  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Nordic countries ↗Decide light or dark before anything else: summer trips (June–August) and aurora trips (September–March in the Arctic) need different countries, clothes and bases.
  • Nordic countries ↗Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and the Faroes sell stronger alcohol only in state shops with short hours; buy before evening and before Sundays and holidays.
  • Faroe Islands ↗The Faroes are part of the Danish realm but outside the EU and Schengen: a Schengen visa is not automatically valid there. Check the Faroese and Danish official sources for your passport.
  • Faroe Islands ↗Many popular trails cross private farmland and require a paid access fee or a guide; check before you walk and do not cross fences.
  • Faroe Islands ↗Subsea tunnels charge tolls; hire cars are usually registered for automatic billing, but ask when you pick up the car.
  • Tórshavn ↗Fog and wind cancel flights, ferries and boat tours at short notice: keep a full spare day before any flight home, and do not book non-refundable tours on your last day.
  • Tórshavn ↗Outside the town, buses are infrequent and often stop early or at weekends: plan a hire car or a guided tour for anything beyond the walkable centre.

Know before you go

  • Tinganes is a peninsula in the old harbour; the name comes from Old Norse and means the headland where the assembly (thing) met.
  • The red and black wooden buildings date from the 16th to 18th centuries in the main; the turf roofs are grass, and the paths are cobbles.
  • The Prime Minister’s office and government departments are here, so it is a working quarter: keep to the lanes and lower your voice.
  • Allow 45 to 60 minutes; the peninsula loop is short but worth a slow walk.
  • The wind is strong on the quay: wear a windproof jacket, even in July.
  • Toilets are in the harbour cafés and public buildings; buy a coffee (check).

How to do it well

  1. 1Walk from the town-centre bed to the peninsula: the lanes start at the harbour, and you can loop the peninsula in 30 to 45 minutes.
  2. 2Look for the red-painted wooden buildings with turf roofs; some are the Prime Minister’s office and parliament departments, so do not knock or enter.
  3. 3Stay on the paths and off the turf roofs; a guided walk in summer adds the history (check the tourist office).
  4. 4End at the harbour front and the cathedral; if it rains, go to a harbour café and come back in a dry gap.

Is it worth going in the rain?

A short walk is fine in light rain, but cobbles are slippery. Go in a dry gap and use a harbour cafe for shelter.
