Mandalay was the last royal capital of Burma before British annexation in 1885, and it remains a centre of Buddhist learning, gold-leaf and marble-carving crafts. The moated and walled Royal Palace (largely a postwar reconstruction after wartime destruction) sits at the city's centre, with Mandalay Hill's covered stairways and pagodas rising above it. Nearby former capitals — Amarapura, Ava (Inwa) and Sagaing — are usually visited as a single day out. The March 2025 earthquake caused damage in and around the city, so current site conditions should be confirmed before travel.
