  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • North Africa ↗Plan links between North African countries by air or by ferry via Europe; the only regularly usable land borders for visitors are Tunisia–Algeria and Morocco–Mauritania via Western Sahara.
  • North Africa ↗Book Saharan nights (dunes, desert camps, oasis tours) between October and April; from May to September desert day temperatures regularly exceed 40 °C and many tours stop.
  • Egypt ↗Check visa rules for your passport on the official Egypt e-visa portal before flying; visa on arrival availability depends on nationality and can change.
  • Egypt ↗Drones need prior permission and are routinely confiscated on arrival; leave them at home.
  • Egypt ↗Do not photograph military sites, police, bridges or government buildings; some museums and tombs charge for or ban photography.
  • Egypt ↗During Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public in daylight; hotels and tourist restaurants still serve.
  • Cairo and Giza ↗Cross-city rides can take 90 minutes at rush hour; plan one district per half-day.
  • Cairo ↗Cairo traffic is heavy from about 07:30 to 10:00 and 15:00 to 20:00: plan one district per half-day and add 45+ minutes to any cross-city ride.
  • Cairo ↗Agree the price of every taxi, camel, horse, carriage or guide before you start; use ride-hailing where you can, since the fare is fixed on the screen.
  • Cairo ↗From about June to August, be on site at opening, and off the open plateau by 10:00.

What to know before you go, how long it takes, when to be there

Know before you go

  • The street runs about 1 km from the northern gates (Bab al-Futuh and Bab al-Nasr) south to Al-Azhar street, with the densest run of monuments in its middle section around the Qalawun-Barquq-Al-Nasir Muhammad complex.
  • Individual monuments along the street (madrasas, sabils, Bayt al-Suhaymi) each sell their own small ticket; the street itself costs nothing to walk.
  • Traffic is banned in the daytime pedestrian hours; check the current times if you are being dropped off by car.

How long is the walk?

About 1 km end to end, 20–30 minutes without stopping; budget 1.5–2.5 hours to go inside a few monuments.

Is it safe at night?

The street is well lit and busy with families in the evening; the usual tout and overcharging caution applies, not a safety concern.
