Nay Pyi Taw has been Myanmar's capital since 2005–2006, when the government moved the seat of power from Yangon to this purpose-built site in the country's centre. It has wide multi-lane avenues sized for military parades, a government quarter, and hotels built for conferences rather than tourism, with almost none of the street life or history that draws visitors to Yangon or Mandalay. Ongoing conflict and shifting travel restrictions across Myanmar since the 2021 military takeover mean conditions here can change with little notice.
