Questions and answers

answered by Voykit editors · dated
Is it the oldest synagogue in the Americas?

The congregation is one of the oldest in the Americas and the building has been in continuous use since 1732; other claims exist, so treat it as one of the oldest.

Checked 2026-09-29 · Voykit desk

Why is there sand on the floor?

It recalls the Exodus wilderness and, by another account, muffled the sound of prayer during the Inquisition. Both explanations are given locally.

How much does it cost?

About US$8–12 in 2026 (check); the museum next door is usually included.

What are the opening hours?

Usually weekdays about 09:00–16:30; closed on Saturday and Jewish holidays. Check the day before.

Is there a dress code?

Modest clothes: shoulders and knees covered.

Can I take photos?

Usually yes without flash outside services; check the sign at the entrance.
