- The building began as a Jesuit church in the early 17th century and was raised to a cathedral in 1870 (≈ US$2,500).
- It mixes late-Gothic and Renaissance features, with a modern extension; the crypt holds the tomb of John the Blind, a medieval count of Luxembourg and king of Bohemia, and the grand-ducal family's burial place.
- It is a working church: services are held daily and on Sunday mornings the interior is not for sightseeing.
- The Octave pilgrimage in spring brings large crowds to the cathedral.
