- The fort dates from the mid-18th century and was built by the Spanish to defend Granada against pirate raids from the lake, the same threat that led to several sackings of the town.
- It later served as a barracks and a prison; it is now a small museum and viewpoint with old cannon and stone rooms.
- The walls are steep and exposed, and there is little shade, so go in the morning with a hat and water.
