Israel designates Jerusalem as its capital and its parliament and government offices are there, though the city's status is disputed and most foreign embassies remain in Tel Aviv. The walled Old City packs the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Al-Aqsa Compound / Dome of the Rock into four adjoining quarters, and access to each shifts with religious calendars and security conditions.

Getting around
The Jerusalem Light Rail and buses cover the newer city; inside the Old City everything is on foot over uneven stone streets and steps, which is hard with luggage or a stroller. Public transport and most shops pause from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening for Shabbat, so plan around it rather than relying on it.

- Public transport, most shops and many restaurants close from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening for Shabbat — plan meals and transfers around it.
- Old City streets are narrow stone stairs in places: rolling luggage and strollers are hard going.
