Know before you go
- Tolkuchka (now officially Altyn Asyr) sits on the ring road outside the centre: it is a car trip, not a walking add-on to a central cluster.
- Sections run from carpets and textiles to household goods, livestock and a small animal market; the carpet section is the best reason to come.
- Weekends (Thu evening through Sunday, especially Sunday morning) are when most stalls are open; a weekday visit can mean half the bazaar shuttered.
- No fixed prices: bargaining is expected, especially for carpets. Bring cash — cards are not accepted by stallholders.
- Toilets and shade are limited across the open grounds — plan water and a hat, and keep the visit to the cooler morning hours.
