- Lake Cocibolca, also called Lake Nicaragua, is the largest lake in Central America. From the shore you see the lake stretching to the horizon and, on clear days, the shape of Volcán Mombacho behind the city.
- The lakefront is the base for boat trips to the Isletas, a group of small islets formed by an ancient eruption of Mombacho, and to Zapatera and other lake islands. Boats leave from local docks: agree the price and length before boarding and check the life jackets.
- Facilities at the water are basic: a few restaurants, a playground and a small dock area. Plan on a drink or a snack and be back in town before dark.
