Check your own government's travel advice first; if you go, base yourself in Tel Aviv for the beach, nightlife and Jaffa's old port, and treat it as a flat, walkable city rather than one that needs a rental car.

  • Middle East ↗Security advice in this region can change within a day; re-read your government's page before departure and again before any border or regional flight.
  • Middle East ↗Public drunkenness, public displays of affection and offensive gestures or online posts can lead to arrest in the Gulf states and Iran; dress modestly outside beaches and hotels.
  • Israel ↗Check your own government travel advice for Israel before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Israel ↗Entry rules, including any pre-arrival authorisation, depend on your passport and on the current border and security position; check the Population and Immigration Authority.

Tel Aviv is Israel's second-largest city by population within the Tel Aviv-Yafo municipality and its commercial and diplomatic centre — most foreign embassies are based here rather than in Jerusalem. It is a Mediterranean beach city built around the Bauhaus-style White City, the old Arab-Jewish port of Jaffa to the south, and a nightlife and food scene that runs later than most of the region.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The city is flat and compact enough to walk or cycle — Tel-O-Fun bike-share stations are everywhere. Buses and the Red Line light rail cover longer hops, and ride-hailing apps work well, but public transport and most shops pause from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening for Shabbat.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Near the beach (Gordon / Frishman)

Sea access, promenade running and restaurants; pricier.

Rothschild Boulevard area

Central, walkable, Bauhaus architecture and cafés.

Florentin

Cheaper, younger, bar-heavy district south of Rothschild; less polished, more nightlife noise.

Practical

What a day costs, what to watch out for, and the pocket card

Watch out

  • Check your own government's travel advice before you go, and again close to departure; the security situation, including occasional rocket-alert sirens, can change with little warning — know the Red Alert app and where your nearest shelter (mamad) is.
  • Public transport and most shops close from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening for Shabbat; taxis and sheruts still run.
  • Summer heat and humidity together are more draining than the temperature alone suggests; keep water on you.
  • Swim only at beaches with a lifeguard flag system, and don't swim on a black-flag day — currents can be strong.
