Know before you go
- Togo means roughly "beginning" in Niuean tradition; the chasm is a collapsed cave system where a pocket of soil and a spring support palms and other trees far below the surrounding bare coral, cut off from the rest of the island.
- The crossing itself, an expanse of sharp fossil coral pinnacles (makatea), is as much the experience as the chasm: it has no shade and is uncomfortable in bare feet or open sandals.
- The final ladder down to the sand floor of the chasm is optional: the viewing platform above gives the same photograph without the climb.
