- Caucasus ↗The Armenia–Azerbaijan and Armenia–Türkiye land borders are closed; any route that crosses them is not a route, however short it looks.
- Caucasus ↗Georgia treats entry to Abkhazia or South Ossetia from Russia as illegal; entering that way can mean arrest or a ban when you next reach Georgia proper.
- Azerbaijan ↗Apply for the e-visa only on the official portal (ASAN Visa); lookalike sites charge extra.
- Azerbaijan ↗Azerbaijan's land border with Armenia is closed to ordinary travellers, and several governments advise against travel near it and in the former conflict areas because of mines and military zones. Read your own government's current advice before you book anything outside Baku and Absheron.
- Azerbaijan ↗Do not photograph military sites, government buildings or oil and gas installations; drones need a permit.
Ganja is Azerbaijan's second-largest city, an old Silk Road town on the road and rail route toward Georgia, and the home town of the medieval poet Nizami Ganjavi. Its restored historic centre runs along Javad Khan pedestrian street, past the 17th-century Shah Abbas (Juma) Mosque and a small canal, the Ganjachay. Most visitors pass through it as a stop between Baku and Tbilisi rather than a destination in itself.

Getting around
The centre is compact and walkable; taxis and city buses cover the outlying sights. The railway and the M2 highway link Ganja to Baku in about 4–5 hours and continue on toward the Georgian border.

Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Around Javad Khan Street
Restaurants and shops, walk to the mosque and the Bottle House.
Near Heydar Aliyev Park
Quieter and greener, still close to the centre.
Practical
What a day costs, what to watch out for, and the pocket card
Watch out
- Check e-visa (ASAN Visa) requirements before travel; most nationalities need one.
- Summer heat is intense and shade is limited around the main square.
- The land border with Armenia remains closed; do not plan a crossing there.
- Card acceptance thins out beyond hotels and chain restaurants; carry manat in cash.
